Dashayin Gilbert Q & A
Q. What did the Ruta Sechaba scholarship mean to you?
A. The Ruta Sechaba scholarship meant one thing for me: possibility. Being able to attend Curro Durbanville opened up countless opportunities for me to find my passion and pursue it.
I was able to be involved in multiple extracurriculars that all related to what I enjoy doing. I was able to be involved in community outreach programs through volunteer work at a local youth camp and with the Diversity Committee at Curro. I served on the learner council and as Head Boy in Grade 12. I founded and managed a successful digital media team. I was named Mr Curro 2022, and captained our soccer team at our regional tournament. Though, most of my spare time was spent developing my Formula One Aerodynamics research, which has thus far received a local full scholarship award and 3rd place in Physics and Astronomy at the largest pre-collegiate science fair in the world.
All of which has built up towards applying to universities overseas in order to pursue my passions. Ruta Sechaba allowed me to grow up in an environment where opportunities were all around me. I just had to make sure I made the most of them.
Q. What are your future plans?
A. I am pursuing a career in motorsport. Specifically, motorsport aerodynamics.
In many years time, my sole motorsport career goal is to make Formula One predictable… I want to design the most dominant cars in F1 history.
Alongside which I would like to develop my existing aerodynamic research toward reducing energy demands and carbon emissions from road cars through aerodynamic concepts.

This scholarship meant that someone had faith and believed in me and my abilites, and I’ll always consider it a blessing.
