About The Ruta Sechaba Foundation
Potential is everywhere in South Africa. Opportunity is not.
That gap is what the Ruta Sechaba Foundation was built to close. For more than a decade, the Foundation has walked alongside young South Africans who have the ability to succeed but simply needed someone to back them.
But opening a door is only the beginning. The real work is making sure young people can walk through it, stay the course, and keep moving forward – through setbacks, transitions, and the moments when the odds still feel stacked against them.
That is where the Foundation’s focus has always been – not just on access, but on what comes after.

Too many talented young South Africans never get the chance to show what they’re capable of – not because of ability, but because of access.
The Ruta Sechaba Foundation was built on a simple conviction: that this changes when someone invests in you. Over more than a decade, that conviction has translated into over 3 000 scholarships, a 94% university exemption rate among Grade 12 learners, and hundreds of young people who have discovered what becomes possible when the door is finally opened.
Education is this country’s most powerful economic lever, and for too long it has been underleveraged. Every young person who falls through the cracks is not just a personal tragedy – it is a loss the whole country carries.

For many years, the conversation in South Africa has been about access, getting learners into schools and universities. And while that matters, we’ve seen first-hand that it’s only the beinning.
At the Ruta Sechaba Foundation, our focus has always been on what happens after that opportunity is given.
We work with young people who have the ability, the drive and the ambition to succeed, but who don’t always have the support system to carry that success forward. The reality is, the transition after matric is not easy. It requires resilience, discipline and a level of independence that many learners are not fully prepared for.
That’s where we come in.
Our role is not just to open doors, but walk alongside these learners as they navigate what comes next. Through financial support, mentorship and ongoing guidance, we aim to give them the foundation they need to keep moving foward, even when things get difficult.
What drives us is simple. There is no shortage of talent in South Africa. But opportunity, support and consistency are what turn that talent into real outcomes.
